How about people within the Europe region? What is the cost of sponsoring someone for a work visa in the UK?

It costs money to sponsor a foreign worker. Typically, visa taxes and application fees total hundreds of pounds. Employers who want to hire EU workers under the Points Based Immigration System must now pay sponsorship fees after the UK withdrew from the EU.

While some of the costs fall on the business, others are the responsibility of the worker who is seeking for a visa. Many employers pay for them completely rather than requiring the employee to make substantial out-of-pocket payments.

The various fees associated with a normal work visa application are listed in this article. It totals slightly about £7,000 in the particular case study we use. On the Home Office website, you may find all the figures mentioned.

A sponsor license’s price

When an organization requests a sponsor license, the Home Office assesses one of the following fees:

£536 if the company is categorized as a small enterprise or a charity;

£1,476 for significant sponsors.

A sponsor license application’s size and charity status are determined according to official advice. Size is often determined using the definitions in Chapter 1 of the Companies Act of 2006:

A business is considered small if it meets two of the following requirements in a fiscal year:

• Sales are not greater than £10.2 million.

• The balance sheet total (the sum of the amounts shown as assets on the company’s balance sheet) does not exceed £5.1 million.

• No more than 50 staff are employed (taken as an average across the financial year)

Licenses from sponsors are good for four years. The expense of renewing it is the same.

Sponsorship fees for skilled workers

The primary work visa route for the UK is known as Skilled Worker. The various expenditures associated with a Skilled Worker application are listed below. However, these are the main ones that will apply to the majority of workers. There are some exceptions to some of the fees (for instance, those who are switching, international students, etc.).

Document proving sponsorship

A certificate of sponsorship, or CoS, is given to employees by authorized sponsors. The worker then submits a CoS to request a visa for a skilled worker.

Each sponsorship certificate has a £199 price tag.

Charge for Immigration Skills

This might be thought of as a tax imposed on companies for hiring foreign labor.

The Immigration Skills Charge for a modest or charity sponsor is £364 for the first year and £182 for each additional six-month period. Therefore, five years of sponsorship would cost £1,820.

The cost is £1,000 for the first year and £500 for each extra six months for a medium- or large-sized sponsor. Five years of sponsorship would cost £5,000 in total.

Application fee for visa

The headline visa application fee is the next cost. There are fees associated with requesting a skilled worker visa from outside the UK.

  • £625 for a three-year visa in a non-shortage profession.
  • Visa for up to three years in a profession in demand: £479
  • Visa fee for non-shortage occupations for more than three years: £1,235
  • Visa for more than years in a profession in demand: £943
  • If the applicant is applying from within the UK, for instance, the actual price may change. Here are further specifics.

Health Surcharge for Immigration

In addition to the application cost mentioned above, there is also a levy on visas called the Immigration Health Surcharge. Each additional year of the visa costs £624. Therefore, the Immigration Health Surcharge raises the price of a five-year visa by £3,120, a three-year visa’s price by £1,872, and a one-year visa’s price by £624.

It is essentially the worker’s responsibility to pay, just like the application cost.

Applicant add-ons that are optional

Additionally, there are a variety of possible administrative costs for services like expedited visa processing, the ability to keep your passport throughout the procedure, having a courier deliver it to you, the opportunity to wait in a posh lounge while the visa is processed, etc. Since they will be applying for an e-visa, many of these won’t apply to EU citizens.

high-end assistance for employers

The Home Office also offers sponsors a premium service. A number of extras are promised for a fee of £25,000 per year for a medium/large business or £8,000 for a small business. You can read more about these extras here.

The payer?

The aforementioned is simply for the worker. They must pay the visa application cost and the Immigration Health Surcharge for any family members traveling with them to the UK as well.

I would always advise companies to ask the person if they have relatives before moving forward with sponsorship and to come to an early understanding of who will cover what fees.

The worker’s application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge may be covered by the sponsor, for instance. Be aware that sponsors are not permitted to legally transfer the Immigration Skill Charge to people. The sponsor also covers the cost of the license.

Research case

Single employee

Ben has a sizable customer base in Japan for his little mail-order company. To oversee the expansion of sales to Japan, he must fund a Japanese speaker.

Ben eventually speaks with Aki, who is ideal for the job (and meets the requirements). He agrees to sponsor Aki for a period of five years. Ben has never employed an international employee before, therefore he must first obtain a sponsor license.

The expense is:

  • Sponsor license amount: £536
  • Sponsorship certificate amount: £199
  • £1,820 is the Immigration Skills Charge.
  • £3,120 Immigration Health Surcharge
  • £1,235 is the application fee.

Total = £6,910.

Ben determines that the cost is just about affordable because hiring a recruitment agent to find a candidate in the UK with the required abilities would cost about the same.

Partner and coworker

A few days later, Aki phones Ben and tells him that, in addition to covering the costs associated with sponsoring her, she can only accept the offer if Ben also covers the cost of her husband’s visa.

It would cost an additional £4,355. This is the same for family members as it is for the sponsored worker, and it includes the visa application price as well as the Immigration Health Surcharge.

The overall amount now stands at £11,265. Ben is unable to sponsor Aki since he cannot afford it.

The most recent costs are now included in this article, which was updated from its original publication in February 2020.
